Italy loses the final for the bronze with the Netherlands 3-0
Vita gazette – Italy fails to win the 2023 Women’s Volleyball European Championship bronze medal. Against the Netherlands, Davide Mazzanti’s team lost with a clear 3-0 (25-23, 28-26, 25-20).
After the defeat against Türkiye, there was further bitterness for the lack of bronze for the blues. Final result: 25-23. Italy closes the 2023 European Volleyball Championship in fourth place, bronze for the Netherlands. The knockout path of the Azzurri had begun with the successes against Spain in the round of 16 and France in the quarterfinals before the 3-2 defeat against the Turks and the one that arrived today, Sunday, 3 September.
In the first set, the Dutch place a draw thanks to great effectiveness in the game in the centre. Mazzanti changes the diagonal and inserts Francesca Bosio to dribble with Egonu in the opposite role, and the Azzurri are back in contact at -1 on 17-16. Two consecutive goal invasions, however, give another mini-break to the rivals, who go on the run. Italy tries the comeback, but an error in Antropova’s service delivers the first set to the oranges, who finish 25-23.
It starts again in balance even in the second set, but the Netherlands find an extension that seems decisive up to +6. After Italy starts a new comeback, reaching even the set point on 25-24 and then on 26-25. But finally, the score was 28-26, worth 2-0.
The Azzurri cannot get back on track in the third set, with the Dutch power plants consistently very effective in attack. Italy therefore closes in fourth place.
The 2023 Women’s Volleyball European Championship does not award Olympic passes for Paris 2024. The Olympic Qualifying Tournament will be staged from 16 to 24 September
