Etna returned to put on a show with a lava fountain and a 10-kilometre-high volcanic ash cloud.
Etna erupts again today, August 4, 2024, with lava fountains and an ash cloud extending into the surrounding area. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Etna Observatory, has reported that the solid Strombolian activity at the Voragine crater has generated the emission of lava and a volcanic cloud with fallout of ash and lapilli towards the East-South-East. The situation has involved several towns, including Acireale and Zafferana, where a thick blanket of ash has already accumulated. Due to the eruption, Catania Airport reduced operations, closed sector B1 and limited arrivals to six flights per hour. Passengers are advised to check the status of their flights with their respective airlines.
