David Donatello 2024, Io Capitano by Matteo Garrone triumphs

On the evening of May 3rd, the David di Donatello 2024 awards were presented, i.e. the awards of the “Oscar night” of Italian cinema, which this year reached its 69th edition, which took place in the Cinecittà Studios in Rome. The evening opened with a tribute to Federico Fellini: a choreography by Luca Tomassini that pays homage to the great director fills the studio, accompanied by Fellini’s voice.
Two Davids were awarded for Lifetime Achievement: to the actress Milena Vukotic and to the brilliant composer Giorgio Moroder. The David Speciale 2024 was awarded to the journalist and critic Vincenzo Mollica.

The Captain has won 7 awards
Triumph for I Captain by Matteo Garrone with 7 awards including Best Film and Best Director. “This film tells the stories of those who are not heard, it was essential to make this film with those who actually lived that contemporary odyssey. Even on set I was lucky enough to work with the extras who had made that trip and helped me and I often found myself co-directing with them.” And he made an appeal: “I believe that it is time to start teaching cinema in schools because it is important that it reaches young people.”
There’s Still Tomorrow has won 6 awards
Paola Cortellesi who with her debut film There’s Still Tomorrow won 6 awards including Best Directorial Debut and Best Leading Actress for the same author and performer. Paola Cortellesi, the first to go up to collect a statuette for “There’s Still Tomorrow”, the public’s David. “We are the spectators, we are all of us and I like to think that there is everything among them, even those who don’t think like me. Thanks to the 5 million people who left their homes, looked for parking and paid for the ticket to see my film”, says the Roman actress and director. Paola Cortellesi the David for best leading actress. “It’s all a big deal, I thank the director (herself) who recommended me!”.
