2023 – Where is the cleanest sea in Italy?
Vita gazette – The 2023 results are based on monitoring the concentrations of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. In general, the picture that has emerged is positive. The quality of marine bathing waters is of a good standard in all regions, with percentages of amazing coastline exceeding 85% and peaks exceeding 99%.
In 2022, over 30,000 samplings were carried out nationwide to assess the sanitary quality of bathing water. Further microbiological analyses were conducted over four years (2019-2022) by the SNPA to determine the cleanest sea in Italy.
The data were presented in Bari during a press conference in the presence of the president of the Puglia region, Michele Emiliano, the regional councillor for the environment, Anna Grazia Maraschino, the general manager of Arpa Puglia, Vito Bruno, the scientific director of Arpa Puglia, Vincenzo Campanaro, and the director of the Arpa Puglia Regional Sea Center, Nicola Ungaro.
The checks also concern lakes and, in a few cases, rivers, where some regions reach 100% excellent waters. The third good news is that Italian waters are better than the average of the countries of the European Union, according to the data processed by the European Environment Agency cited on the Snpa website.

The 2023 samplings have already started for several weeks and will continue throughout the summer. The results of the analyses are published on the websites of the individual Arpa (Regional Agency for the Protection of the Environment) and on the “Acque” portal of the Ministry of Health. To protect the health of bathers, surveillance monitoring is also envisaged to identify any potentially toxic algal species.
