“It opened its door to us on all fours.”

University of Milan-Bicocca UniMIB has created a revolutionary application. By joint decision, the university has opened its doors to cats and dogs. University employees will thus be able to bring their four-legged friends to the workplace.
Is it possible to go to university with your dog or cat? At the University of Milan-Bicocca, UniMiB offers all employees the opportunity to bring their four-legged “friend” to the workplace. Bicocca University has approved the “Regulations for the access of staff pets to the University premises,” which allows all employees – professors, researchers, and technical, administrative, and library staff – to bring their dog or cat to the workplace.
Access to the offices, however, is only permitted if you meet specific requirements. Among these are identification microchips, registration in the Pet Animal Registry, a health card, the certification of vaccination prophylaxis and anti-parasitic treatments, and a subscription to an insurance policy that provides coverage for any damage caused to people or things by the animal. Also, from a behavioural point of view, the animal hosted in the University must not have problems such as showing aggression towards other dogs or people. From a hygienic-sanitary point of view, the owners will be required to have everything necessary to care for dogs and cats in the offices.
Access to your pets will not be permitted in offices that provide direct and continuous contact with the public, classrooms and educational laboratories, study rooms, conference and meeting rooms, the library, canteen spaces and designated areas, at the coffee break, or places where outpatient healthcare services or similar facilities are provided.
Employees can enjoy the company of their four-legged friend subject to authorisation from their manager for access. In the case of shared offices, this must be accompanied by the formal consent of the other occupants of the room, as specified in the regulation that came into force on March 28, 2024.
