Tens of thousands in Rome in support of Europe
A demonstration in support of the European Union (EU) was held in Rome, the capital of Italy. Tens of thousands took part in the demonstration on Saturday in Piazza del Popolo.
Piazza del Popolo during the demonstration “A square for Europe. Many cities, one voice”. Organized after the appeal by journalist Michele Serra for the relaunch of Europe and its founding values of freedom, peace, social justice and democracy.
The demonstration started to the tune of the Ode to Joy. In the square, those present waved the flags of the European Union, of peace and many signs against social inequalities. Thousands of people participated in the demonstration, supporting Europe and its founding values. “Let’s get a move on”, said journalist Michele Serra from the stage in Piazza del Popolo.
“We have these two precious words in our hands, peace and freedom, but we don’t know how to use them without them falling to the ground, breaking, and leaving us with only the pieces. This square has no answers, but it has obvious questions. This square is a blue question mark. We are the question that we hand over to ourselves, those who govern us, and those who represent us in the Italian Parliament and the European Parliament. Those who delude themselves into thinking they have the answers in their pockets, know how to make war and know how to make peace are not here today”, added Serra.
Gualtieri: “Europe makes us feel more united”
The capital’s mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, reiterated that Europe “must be popular, not populist”. “Everyone here today has their ideas, but we are all with the flag of Europe. As Italian citizens, we feel like European citizens, and we feel with our hearts that in this world, without Europe, our personal and social rights are at stake”, added Gualtieri. “We need a step forward towards a Europe of solidarity that makes us feel more united. Only Europe can regain our sovereignty, and a stronger Europe must be the bearer of peace. It is a great challenge that we face; we can no longer postpone; we will be there; long live Europe”, concluded the mayor of Rome.
