Spray for Migraine
Vita gazette – The good news is on the way for people who struggle with acute migraines and can’t take pills due to nausea.
A new spray has been produced to end severe migraine attacks that paralyse our daily lives, nausea accompanied by pain, and sensitivity to sound and light. The US Food and Drug Administration approved a new nasal spray as a rapid treatment for adult migraine pain. Developed by the American pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, the nasal spray Zavzpret (zavegepant) is approved to treat acute migraine with or without aura in adult patients.
The nasal spray zavegepant, sold as Zavzpret, may relieve pain and other bothersome migraine symptoms as soon as 15 minutes after use, drugmaker Pfizer said in a news release. The company said the drug would be available in pharmacies in July 2023.
Different medications are available to treat migraines, including several nasal sprays. Zavzpret is the first to work by blocking the calcitonin gene-related peptide, CGRP, a protein released in the brain that contributes to inflammation. Several pills block CGRP, but many people with migraines experience significant nausea and can’t tolerate the medications they have to swallow.
Zavzpret is also an alternative for people who have heart disease or other conditions that prevent them from being able to use other kinds of migraine treatments safely.
In two studies where people with migraines didn’t know if they were getting the drug or a placebo, Zavzpret was more effective at relievthan a nasal spray without red with a nasal spray without any active ingredients.
