Palazzo Vecchio defaced

Florence, the mayor Dario Nardella: “Ecologists? No, vandals”

Vita gazette – Florence is yet another act of vandalism against works of art to draw attention to environmental protection. Wasted over five thousand litres of water to clean up the damage. And mayor Nardella defends the city: “They say they are environmentalists, but I had to use 5,000 litres of water to clean…”

Yet another blitz of pseudo-environmental activists who want to attract attention by targeting works of art has ended with an opposite result for the purposes these real vandals say they want to pursue. Over five thousand litres of water were needed to remove the paint from the facade of one of the symbols of Florence. The timeliness of the intervention was decisive because the colour used, albeit water-based, contains substances that are very dangerous for the porous stones of which the historic building is made.

the Minister of Culture: “pure vandalism”

The Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, commented, “yet another reckless action, pure vandalism without any extenuating circumstances. These are not demonstrative gestures without damage because, in addition to the considerable cleaning costs that fall on the community, the consequences on the image of Italy, intimately linked to the national cultural heritage, must be considered. We are working on strengthening the sanctioning system, especially on rules that make those responsible pay for cleaning and restoring the places”.

Nardella: “They are barbarians”

“What the fuck are you doing? What the fuck are you doing?”. “Get off, get off: what the fuck are you doing” the mayor yells. And when the activist continues, Nardella insists: “What the fuck are you doing? What sanctions”. The mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, lashed out at one of the Last Generation climate activists. After the statue in Piazza Duomo, the runways of private jets at Malpensa and the smeared works of art, the environmentalists have stained the facade of the building with red. “They are barbarians”, was Nardella’s comment. The images of Dario Nardella, mayor of Florence, who blocks the vandals who soil Palazzo Vecchio and then helps clean up, have gone viral.

The two activists were reported to the judiciary for soiling buildings of cultural or landscape significance, for an unauthorised demonstration and for failure to comply with the expulsion order issued by the police station for three years: they had already been reported on 12 February, together with two other people, for the soiling of the Regional Council of Tuscany in Florence.
