The mobile pedestrian path opened on the Trevi Fountain

In the area of the Trevi Fountain Pool, which has been maintained, a vehicle-friendly pedestrian path has been opened to allow visitors to see the sculptures.

The historic fountain, one of the symbols of Rome and is visited annually by millions of tourists, hosted an exciting inauguration. While the extensive maintenance and repair activities started by the Municipality of Rome at the beginning of last month continue, the municipal administration has found a temporary solution for visitors. Due to maintenance work, the water in the fountain’s basin has been drained, and a portable walking path has been set up here, allowing visitors to see other statues up close, notably the Poseidon statue on the fountain.

It has just been installed and is already the subject of controversy. The new walkway mounted on the Trevi Fountain, made to allow tourists to observe the work more closely while the renovation work scheduled for the start of the Jubilee continues, has already sparked the hearts of many, including the traders in the square. They gathered in the Trevi Fountain committee and criticized the scaffolding because being placed on the basin, it would damage the marble and travertine…

On Monday, 11 November, the traders will ask to remove the structure during a meeting with the councillors for Tourism and Commerce, Alessandro Onorato and Monica Lucarelli. The last necessary restoration of the famous fountain took place between 2014 and 2015 with the contribution of Fendi. The previous intervention dates back to 1989-1991, while in this case, it involves extraordinary maintenance lasting approximately three months. By the end of the year, the Trevi Fountain should be ready to reopen to visitors on the occasion of the Jubilee. The works are supervised by the Capitoline Superintendency and promoted by the Culture Department of Rome Capital. The operation is part of a more extensive maintenance intervention as part of the Pnrr – Caput Mundi program, which also includes interventions on the Quirinale Fountain, the Barcaccia, the Turtles and the Tiares, for a total amount of 1.187 million euros.

The mayor of Rome, Roberto Gualtieri, opened the mobile bridge. Gualtieri explained that even if the fountain remains closed for a short period for maintenance, thanks to this portable bridge, both Romans and tourists arriving in their city will have the opportunity to see the Trevi Fountain differently while the works are in progress.
