Italy reclaims its cultural heritage
Vandals fined up to 60,000 euros
Vita gazette – The government took action against attacks on the increasing number of historical and cultural works of art. From now on, those who damage monuments and cultural sites will pay a fine of up to 60,000 euros. The fines collected will be used for repairs and cleaning.
Italy’s Cabinet approved a bill to fine vandals who damage monuments or other cultural sites up to 60,000 euros. According to the draft law prepared under the leadership of Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, the penalty for vandalism crimes will start from 10 thousand euros. It can go up to 60 thousand euros.
The actions to draw attention to the climate crisis by attacking historical and cultural artworks that have started in Italy and other countries in recent years have reached the level of vandalism. It is necessary to use both time, expert teams and very costly machines to clean up the sad attacks that cause the public to be psychologically affected.
Stating that the government had to pay 40 thousand euros to clean the façade of the 15th-century Palazzo Madama in Turin, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List after it was vandalised recently, Minister Sangiuliano said that such attacks hurt everyone economically. The vandals had already damaged the Palazzo del Senato and Palazzo Vecchio.
In the previous days, activists had poured black paint into the waters of a fountain made by Baroque sculptor Bernini in Rome, demanding action on climate change.
In June 2022, a US tourist was banned for life from Rome’s Spanish Steps after causing $26,000 in damage with an electric scooter.
The 28-year-old woman responsible for the incident reportedly threw an electric scooter off an iconic landmark in the Italian capital. At that time, someone shooting while crossing the road recorded the event on camera.
Police eventually caught the woman and the unidentified man with her, who was initially fined $400. A week before the scooter incident, a Saudi businessman who “went the wrong way” drove his Maserati down the Spanish Steps.
