The Pope rejects Harris and Trump: “Both are against life”
Pope Francis criticises Kamala Harris for defending the right to abortion and Donald Trump for the anti-immigrant plan, “Both are against life, both the one that throws away migrants and the one that kills children”.
After 12 days spent between Asia and Oceania, visiting four countries – Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Singapore – Pope Francis returned to Italy. During the journey, he also answered some questions from journalists. In November, Americans will vote and have to choose between the Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and the Republican Donald Trump. The Pontiff also explained his idea on the race for the White House. Pope Francis has no doubts and has harsh words towards both. The former is criticised because it is in favour of abortion and the restoration of federal protection to women who choose to terminate their pregnancies; the latter is criticised for its positions on immigration.
The positions on migrants and abortion
“Both are against life, both the one who throws away migrants and the one who kills children,” the Pontiff dismisses them. And then he adds: “Sending migrants away, not giving them the ability to work, not giving migrants hospitality is a sin, it’s serious”, referring to Trump, who promised to deport 11 million irregular migrants in the country, “who it doesn’t take care of the missing migrant, it’s a shame. A sin also against those people’s lives: migration is a right already in the Holy Scripture, in the Old Testament.” But he also has words for the Democratic candidate. “Science says that within a month of conception, all the organs of a human being are present. To have an abortion is to kill a human being. Don’t like the word? The Church is not closed because it does not allow abortion. The Church does not allow abortion because killing is murder. And we must be clear about this. For these reasons, his advice to American voters of the Catholic faith is to still go to the polls and choose the lesser evil. Which of the two then? Everyone thinks in conscience and makes their choice.”
