Vita gazette – Giorgia Meloni’s government has obtained confidence in the Chamber. With a large majority, as expected: 235 votes were in favour, 154 against and five abstentions. Tomorrow vote in the Senate. She says she has no sympathy for fascism: “The only thing I ask is to be judged for what I say, think and do.”

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni gave her speech in the Chamber before the vote of confidence in her government. It has ranged from a flat tax to immigration, from citizenship income to the Covid crisis, and from the position on Ukraine to presidential. “We are in the storm. Our job is to bring the ship to port”. Meloni started with the taxman to illustrate the critical points of the government program. A new fiscal pact will rest on three pillars: reduce pressure, fight tax evasion, and introduce a flat tax. Among the issues addressed by the premier also expensive energy, defence of the environment and legality, the fight against irregular immigration and presidential reform. Among the salient points is the Citizenship Income he would like to change. Then the premier spoke of semi-presidential to stabilize the country, support families, and modify pensions for flexibility. And on the PNRR, he specified: “The money is in debt; it must be spent well.”

“The only thing I ask is to be judged for what I say, think and do.”

“I will never be afraid of frank, direct words, and even strong criticisms; I am a person who has done it in the past; I have never spared anyone, and I have never disrespected my opponents, and I do not expect that the oppositions today do it with me. Therefore, I only ask to be judged for what I say, think and do”. Thus, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, in reply to the Chamber.

“I have never felt sympathy for any regime, including fascism.”

During the elections, even Meloni, accused of being a fascist and a fan of Mussolini, expressed his views in this direction:

“The racist laws of 1938 are the lowest in our history. I saw this as an embarrassment that would forever stigmatize our people. Freedom and democracy are the hallmarks of contemporary European civilization in which I have always seen myself. For this reason, I have never felt sympathy and closeness to undemocratic regimes. I have no sympathy for any regime, including fascism.”

“I will never be anyone’s cheerleader.”

The premier replied to the leader of the Democratic Party, Debora Serracchiani, who, during the debate, had spoken of women who are a step behind men, when Meloni replied that her role proves that she is not like that.

“I don’t have to make any choices; I’ll never be anyone’s cheerleader.”

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this in response to the Chamber of Deputies in Europe. On the position on Europe, “might it not be that the story told about us and what we believed was a bit forced in the attempt to build the image of the monster? And when it becomes difficult to prove that the monster does not exist, just a twist be invented? In Italian history, turning points have always been twisted but do not expect them from us; we are not used to turning around.” Thus, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed the opposition in reply to the Chamber. Speaking of Europe, she added: “It is a strong subject who should do less and do it better, not take care of everything; after all, it is written in the treaties: it is the principle of subsidiarity, that is the theme I have posed to you.”

“A fully political and representative government”

The premier has announced a manifesto for the five years of the legislature. “Hastiness was a must because the country’s situation does not allow us to waste time, and we do not intend to do so”, said Meloni in her speech to the Chamber, underlining that today an entirely political government and representative of the popular will is being created.

“Tackling the energy crisis.”

Prime Minister Meloni stressed that the economy was going through a challenging period and said they would adopt measures to support families and businesses against high energy costs. Meloni said that fiscal peace is one such measure: “The economic situation is going through the most difficult period since the war. 2023 will be the year of the recession. “We are ready to propose fiscal peace in a way that will allow struggling citizens and SMEs to streamline their fiscal situation,” she said. Furthermore, Meloni stressed that there are gas fields they should benefit from in the seas where Italy has a coastline and that they should head there.

“We protect national production.”

Prime Minister Meloni said that the economic recovery and debt reduction would be achieved through permanent and structural economic growth: “We are open to encouraging foreign investment to achieve this goal. While we oppose predatory logics that jeopardize national strategic production, we will be open to welcoming foreign companies that choose to invest in Italy, bringing development, employment, and ‘know-how’ in a mutually advantageous logic”.

“We prevent illegal immigration.”

Stating that they will fight against illegal immigration, Meloni listed the measures they will take as follows:

“Italy, like any sovereign country, is not open to illegal immigration. There is no discussion of the right of asylum for those fleeing wars and persecution, but traffickers cannot determine who will enter Italy. Our intention as a government is to combat irregular migration. We intend to return to the original EU proposal to prevent the departure of ships from North Africa, which was foreseen in the third phase of the Sophia Mission but never implemented. We will raise this proposal at the European level. In agreement with the North African authorities, we will ask to establish centres run by international organizations on African soil and evaluate asylum applications there “.

“No rights will be limited.”

In his speech, Meloni also said it would be a government respectful of rights and freedoms and said:

“As a government, we will not test any of the rights of citizens and businesses. This includes civil rights and abortion. We will fight against all forms of discrimination, racism, and anti-Semitism. We will also tackle the country’s mafia problem, which has turned into cancer.”

“The presidential system should arrive”

“Italy needs constitutional reform, in the sense of a presidential system that guarantees stability and re-centers the sovereignty of the people. We want to discuss this issue with all political parties in parliament. We will not give up reforming Italy in the face of biased opposition. We will proceed according to the mandate. We want to start from the idea of semi-presidentialism on the French model, widely accepted in the past, even by the center-left, but we are open to other solutions.”

US-NATO-EU-G7

Stating that the current rules of the EU will be respected, the government will contribute to changing the rules that do not work, said:

Italy is part of the West and its alliance systems. Is the founder of the European Union (EU) and the Atlantic Alliance (NATO), a member of the G7 and the cradle of Greece and Western civilization and its system of values. We will make our voices heard in the EU institutions, as befits a great founding nation. We will do this not to slow down or sabotage European integration, but to help bring Europe closer to citizens and businesses in responding to crises and external threats. We will respect the commitments in force with the EU”. In this context, Meloni noted that Ukrainian politics will continue.
