Trump-Zelensky clash: Meloni calls for US-EU summit

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni proposes a global summit between the United States, the EU and allies to address the Ukrainian issue after the harsh clash between Trump and Zelensky.

After the intense confrontation between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky, Europe unites in support of the Ukrainian president, reiterating its solidarity. Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni urges the West to remain united and calls for an urgent summit between the United States, European countries and allies.

Reactions after the harsh clash in the Oval Office of the White House between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky and updates on the war in Ukraine. Donald Trump’s unexpected and harsh reprimand towards Volodymyr Zelensky, which took place under the eyes of the cameras in the Oval Office, could mark a turning point in the world.

Faced with an increasingly tense situation, Meloni proposed the urgent convening of a summit between the United States, the European Union and allies to address the challenges of global security frankly. “Every division between Western democracies makes us more vulnerable and favours those who aim to undermine the fundamental values on which our civilization is based,” said the Italian Prime Minister, underlining the need to preserve the cohesion of the West. In the Italian government, however, the reactions were not univocal. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called for caution, urging people to remain calm during the diplomatic crisis. “It is a delicate moment; we need strong nerves,” he commented. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who openly expressed his support for Trump, shared on social media the video of the clash with Zelensky accompanied by an explicit “Forza Donald”, had a completely different opinion.

The opposition: “Now Meloni must choose: either with Europe or with Trump.”

The opposition’s criticisms were not long in coming. Carlo Calenda called Trump a “bully,” while the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, spoke of an episode of “unheard-of violence. “Now Meloni must choose: either with Europe or with Trump,” insisted Schlein, highlighting the difficulty the prime minister has in managing her relationship with the former US president. Giuseppe Conte also harshly attacked Trump, accusing him of favouring Putin and calling the Italian government to stand up for Kyiv.

The affair sparked immediate reactions from several European leaders. Emmanuel Macron, Donald Tusk and Pedro Sánchez openly sided with Kyiv, highlighting the growing distance between the European and US approaches. Europe with Zelensky: “Your dignity honours the courage of the Ukrainian people. You are never alone”, say the presidents of the Commission von der Leyen and the Parliament Metsola.
