Regional elections in Sardinia 2024:

Alessandra Todde’s victory

Vita gazette – Alessandra Todde, M5S candidate supported by the Democratic Party and the centre-left, won the regional elections in Sardinia on Sunday, 25 February. Truzzu stops at 45%. Conte: Broad field with the PD? No, it’s the right field.

Three thousand votes more than the challenger Paolo Truzzu (centre-right): thus Alessandra Todde (centre-left) wins the regional elections and becomes the first governor of Sardinia. The mayoral election, which took place yesterday in Sardinia, resulted in a head-to-head battle between the centre-right and centre-left.

The final turnout recorded at the closing of the polls was 52.4% (758,252 voters out of 1,447,753 voters), down 1.3% compared to the regional turnout five years ago (53.7%).

Alessandra Todde 330,619 (45.4%) – (Pd-M5S)

Paolo Truzzu 327,695 (45%) – (Fdi-FI-Lega)

Renato Soru 63,021 (8.7%) – (Action-Europe-IV)

Lucia Chessa 7,147 (1%) – (civic list)

The success achieved by acting together has laid the foundations of the alliance between Pd and M5S, which envisages winning by acting together in the next electoral rounds in 2024. The votes obtained by the parties and candidates external to the two alliances have transmitted to the Italian people the message: “By uniting, we can win”. The League collapses, and Forza Italia overtakes it.

Alessandra Todde: “After 75 years, the glass ceiling has broken”

“I am the first female president; I am happy to be alongside Conte and Schlein; the coalition has invested in this result. After 75 years, the glass ceiling has broken. Sardinia responded to the truncheons with pencils. I will also go to Abruzzo. Pd and M5S have been generous to me, and I will go and campaign for them. To be able to create a solid project that can convince the electorate, the alliance between the PD and M5S is the only way.”

In her past, Alessandra Todde boasts positions as undersecretary of state at the Ministry of Economic Development from 16 September 2019 to 13 February 2021 in the Conte II Government and as deputy minister for Economic Development from 1 March 2021 to 22 October 2022 in the Draghi Government.

Conte: “The air has changed”

Giuseppe Conte, leader of the M5S “Sardinia, has chosen our Alessandra Todde. She is the first Regional President of the M5S, the first woman to lead Sardinia. It’s an unforgettable day. The Sardinian citizens closed the door to Giorgia Meloni and associates and opened it to the alternative. The air has changed.” Thus, on Instagram, the leader of the Five Star Movement, Giuseppe Conte. “You don’t always win with arrogance without even engaging with citizens, without even stopping to listen to their problems. We won by listening to the cry of pain of the territories, offering solutions against a healthcare system ruined by the center-right. We won with Alessandra’s strength and competence, with serious and credible proposals, with a ‘right field’ with the other political forces. There is no need for crowds, very large and minefields”, adds the leader of the M5S. “Alessandra, we are sure that you will change everything with seriousness, heart, and courage. Come on!” he concludes.

Elly Schlein: “One thing is certain: the alternative is there”

Elly Schlein, Secretary of the Democratic Party, said, “They were sure they would win; they came here to Cagliari with great fanfare, with prime minister and vice prime minister, and Sardinia responded. He lost Paolo Truzzu, he lost Giorgia Meloni, who imposed it by force, and he also lost Matteo Salvini.” PD secretary Elly Schlein wrote it on Facebook. “We haven’t won a region in which the right governs since 2015. In two weeks, we can also win in Abruzzo with Luciano d’Amico – she adds – One thing is certain: the alternative is there. As Secretary, exactly one year before the primaries, I couldn’t hope for a better reason to celebrate! It shows that the direction taken is the right one and that being stubbornly united bears fruit. We will also be so in view of other equally important challenges because today, we have shown that the right can be beaten! Go Sardinia and go Alessandra!”.

Carlo Calenda: “It’s a lesson we will take into account”

“The regional elections are confirmed to be insurmountable, given the one-round electoral system and the low participation which marginalizes the opinion vote, for the forces and candidates who are outside the two poles of the right and the left. It’s a lesson we will take into account. The entirely internal collapse of the right is a good sign for the country and for Sardinia, which the League had governed very badly”. Action leader Carlo Calenda writes it on X.

Giorgia Meloni, Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini

Salvini: “The people who vote are always right”

That of the coalition in Sardinia “remains a defeat on which we will think together to evaluate the possible mistakes made”. This is what we read in a joint note by Giorgia Meloni, Antonio Tajani and Matteo Salvini commenting on the outcome of the elections in Sardinia.

Matteo Salvini, The leader of the League, said, “When you win, we all win together; when you lose, we all lose together. Every now and then, falling can also help you examine what you can do more and better. The candidate of the 5 Star Movement won. In a democracy, this is right. After five consecutive victories, there could be a defeat. When the people vote, they are always right.”

Manlio Messina (FdI):

The deputy group leader of the Fratelli d’Italia deputies, Manlio Messina, “It is not a defeat for Meloni”.
