Rome without trams for two months

Starting Monday, October 6th, Rome will suspend all tram services, replacing them with free shuttle buses until December 7th, as part of major construction work on the Eastern Ring Road.

Starting Monday, October 6th, Rome’s entire tram network will be suspended. The six lines, 2, 3, 5, 8, 14, and 19, will be suspended for two months and replaced entirely by buses.

The scaffolding being used for the maintenance works by road infrastructure company Anas will impede the use of the overhead power cables used by the trams, as well as disrupting traffic around Porta Maggiore, San Lorenzo and along Via Prenestina.

The work will prevent trams from leaving the Porta Maggiore and Prenestina depots, as it will be necessary to disconnect the power lines, making the operation of Rome’s six tram lines impossible. They will also take the opportunity to upgrade four sections of the tram infrastructure, bringing forward the work originally scheduled for 2026.

The Capitoline Hill has developed an alternative bus transportation plan to reduce traveler inconvenience, with an increase in the number of trips.

Rome’s six tram lines (numbers 2, 3, 5, 8, 14, and 19) will return to service on December 8th, a public holiday in Italy, coinciding with the opening of the new Metro C stations at Colosseum and Porta Metronia.

Increased service to compensate for the tram suspension

Rubber-tired vehicles, which have less capacity than trams, will increase their service to ensure an adequate number of seats.

Line 2: 444 daily trips compared to the tram’s 337.

Line 3: 325 trips compared to the original 180.

Line 5: 248 trips compared to the tram’s 189.

Line 8: 824 trips per day, more than double the tram’s 323.

Line 14: 316 trips compared to the tram’s 242.

Line 19: 208 daily trips compared to the tram’s 178.
