The Venice Carnival celebrates: The Time of Casanova
On the 300th anniversary of its birth, the Venice Carnival returns to enchant the world from February 14 to March 4, 2025, with a special edition entitled “The Time of Casanova” dedicated to the timeless figure of the Venetian.
Venice will host 18 days of Carnevale this year, with events occurring along the city’s canals and across its bridges and squares from February 14 until March 4. Celebrating the anniversary of his birth 300 years ago, the Venice Carnival 2025 will pay homage to the life and adventures of Giacomo Casanova, one of the most fascinating characters of 18th-century Venice.
The city of Venice dedicates one of its most iconic events, the Carnival, to one of the most famous Venetians in history. Casanova was a multifaceted and controversial character who engaged in multiple legal and illicit activities. Known throughout the world as a seducer, man of letters, gambler and cheat, braggart and ophthalmologist, soldier, historian, and spy, to name just a few of his inclinations, Casanova is also one of the most famous travellers who crossed Europe in the eighteenth century.
The festivities begin officially on February 14, Valentine’s Day, with live music and dancing in Piazza San Marco or St Mark’s Square. A spectacular procession will occur along the Grand Canal on February 16 when masked rowers will lead 100 colourful boats through the city. Another annual favourite on the calendar, the Festa delle Marie pageant, takes place on February 22 with a sumptuous parade from Piero di Castello that will reach St Mark’s Square, where the most beautiful of the 12 “Marias” will be crowned on March 3.
The Venice Carnival 2025, under Massimo Cecchetto’s artistic direction, will retrace his seductive and surprising life, giving the public suggestions of a man whose name is inextricably linked to the history of the city and the eighteenth century.
As usual, the Carnival 2025 program also includes many outdoor and indoor events, both free and paid: large stages in the main city squares, shows on small stages and performances by street artists, parties and shows at the Arsenale of Venice and in some Venetian palaces, processions, parades, dinners, dances, and numerous other initiatives that attract tourists and residents from all over the world.
History of Venice Carnival
Carnevale di Venezia dates back to the 14th century, perhaps earlier, and over the centuries, it was frequently forbidden under various rulers.
The modern-day version of the Venice Carnival has occurred for the past 100 years.
Carnival ends each year the day before Ash Wednesday, which signifies the start of Lent, traditionally a fasting and abstinence period leading up to Easter.
