Global market research company Euromonitor International has released its annual ranking of city destinations based on tourism, sustainability and economic performance. The Top 100 City Destinations Index 2023, produced in partnership with data company Lighthouse, looked at leading cities worldwide and ranked them on tourism, sustainability, economic performance and health and safety criteria.
Europe became the leader
Paris was crowned the most attractive city destination in the world in the Top 100 City Destinations Index 2023, with seven European cities landing in the top 10 and the continent owning 63 spots in the top 100 overall. Paris has retained the title of the world’s leading city following exceptional performance across the Tourism Policy and Attractiveness.
Paris was followed by Dubai in second place, Madrid in third, Tokyo in fourth and Amsterdam in fifth. The top 10 was rounded out by Berlin (6), Rome (7), New York (8), and Barcelona. (9) and London (10). The only non-European cities in the top 10 were Dubai, Tokyo and New York. The report attributes Europe’s success to “fast-paced urbanisation and widespread technology adoption.” Travelers now want high-speed internet, flexible booking options and spaces for remote working.
On the list is Italy with its pearls
Among the most visited cities are the immortal Rome (7), Milan, the centre of fashion and commerce (13), Florence with its Renaissance scent (29), the city of fairy tales Venice (37), the city of Romeo and Juliet, Verona, founded in the eastern part of Lake Garda (75), Bologna (76), which stands out for its medieval architecture.
Four new cities made the Top 100 City Destinations
Four new cities made the Top 100 City Destinations for 2023: Washington, DC (48), Montreal (68), Santiago (88) and Vilnius (92).
Tokyo entered the top 10
Tokyo entered the top 10 for the first time, which the report says is down to improved tourism infrastructure, the easing of Covid-19-related regulations and the weakened Yen – which offers international visitors great value for money.
Asia was also well-represented at the top of the rankings
Asia did well in the top 20. Asia was also well represented at the top of the rankings, with Singapore (11), Seoul (14), Osaka (16), and Hong Kong (17) all making the top 20.
International travel continued to make a strong recovery, with the number of trips projected to reach 1.3 billion by the end of 2023 – generating around $1.7 trillion in global tourism spending.
