Caffè Greco, the Ministry of Culture, stopped the executive eviction

Thanks to the Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Caffè Greco, one of Rome’s historical and cultural symbols, survived the danger of being evacuated and destroyed.

Antico Caffè Greco, which has been located on Via dei Condotti for almost 250 years, has once again escaped the danger of eviction. The State Attorney’s Office once again blocks the eviction of Antico Caffè Greco.

The Israelite Hospital, owner of the walls, obtained confirmation of the eviction of the current managers whose lease expired in 2017. Both the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court confirmed the order, rejecting Carlo Pellegrini’s appeal. But just when the eviction was due to be carried out, on February 20, the Ministry of Culture intervened.

At the heart of the matter are the works, furnishings and all those objects of artistic and historical importance contained in the Antico Caffè Greco, which for the Mic are immovable. For this reason, a further investigation is requested, with a new hearing. Although the Israelite Hospital has already guaranteed that the destination of the place will remain the same, without any upheaval, the concern of the ministry is related to the fate that the furnishings will have. Minister Alessandro Giuli intervened on the subject: “Our task is to study the issue and try to offer ourselves as mediators of a discussion between the parties; it is a question of guaranteeing the survival of a historic jewel of national culture, compatibly with laws that must be respected. The importance does not escape us; it is such that metaphorically, the siren at the MiC has already rung”.
