DeepSeek blocked in Italy

DeepSeek was blocked in Italy by the Privacy Guarantor, the reason for the urgent decision for Italian data.

On January 28, the Guarantor sent a request for clarification to the two companies, requesting detailed information on collecting and processing personal data.

The Authority wanted to verify which data was collected, from which sources, for what purposes and on what legal basis. Furthermore, he asked for clarification on the possible storage of data on Chinese servers and the potential use of web scraping for artificial intelligence training.

The Chinese companies involved declared that they do not operate in Italy and are not subject to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), a position that the Italian Authority did not consider valid.

The companies had 20 days to respond. The response received was considered insufficient, prompting the Guarantor to take immediate action to protect Italian users.

The provision

Following the invalid responses, the Privacy Guarantor ordered Deepseek to limit the immediate processing of Italian users’ data.

The measure was adopted to guarantee privacy protection and evaluate possible violations of European data protection regulations.

It was banned in the US Navy.

In addition to the limitation, further investigation has been opened into the matter. Chinese companies continue to maintain that they are not subject to EU regulations.
