The most fantastic event of the summer returns:
A Chiena di Campagna
Vita gazette – The most excellent and most anticipated event of the summer returns: A Chiena di Campagna in the province of Salerno, where the Tenza river overflows and floods the city.
A tremendously famous festival not to be missed. In the countryside, near Salerno, the Chiena will be held, and there will be a big party in which the streets of Salerno town will be flooded, and people will walk in the water or exchange buckets of water. The party will continue for all the following Saturdays and Sundays until the big final party on August 25, 2024.
The Chiena 2024 edition will include the fantastic “Midnight Chiena” party. This year, the festival also presents many fun and fresh events in which everyone can participate.
One of the most characteristic events in southern Italy is undoubtedly ‘A china di Campagna’ in the province of Salerno. It is repeated yearly during the festival, which traditionally floods the town streets with the partial diversion of the Tenza River, a tributary of the Sele. An artificial course allows the water to flow through the town, where curious tourists flock all over for an event of incredible beauty and charm.
The origins of the event are lost in time. According to some, the city’s flooding was linked to cleaning the streets and shops, as in Turin in 1700, to clean the most important streets.
This year, there will be great news with 2 Chiena di Mezzanotte parties, which will take place (walk only, no buckets) at midnight sharp on 2 and 16 August 2024: water will flow in the historic centre of the city, while, in the unusual nocturnal setting, spontaneous musical, theatrical, and dance shows will take place.
On the various days of Sunday, there is a walk at 12.00 and then a bucket at 3.30. A sort of challenge occurs in the streets, where buckets of water are thrown at each other. On these days, access to the centre will be subject to a fee (8 euros + prev per person) with discounts for families: Luggage storage service and cloakroom service are offered,
An event full of events such as the famous bucket where you can have fun with buckets of water! The bucket will be held every Sunday afternoon to refresh all passers-by and locals from the summer heat.
This year, the Chiena will also take place among the flooded streets, buckets, walks and midnight floods, and it will be a great event not to be missed. In addition to the weekend program, which includes walks or throwing water (buckets) through the flooded streets, there will also be other events, including guided tours of the town and the nearby valleys.

The War of Colors (4 August 2024): at 10 am. It is a playful battle that is fought without weapons, or instead, the most lethal weapons are simple wet and coloured sponges, obviously with strictly non-toxic colours, dipped in large tubs, after which they are used to hit anyone within range. The event aims to be, above all, a fun moment which, on the one hand, exorcises the word “war” with colours, a symbol of peace, and on the other, wants to make us reflect on how useless and senseless it is.
Holi party (11 August at 3.30 pm, before the buckets): During the Holi party, coloured powders (non-toxic, hypoallergenic, natural, eco-friendly, and certified) will be thrown into the air. The festival of colours takes inspiration from HOLI. This Indian festival celebrates the awakening of spring, the cancellation of differences, and cultural and creative integration by breaking down social, ethnic, and cultural diversity.
The Midnight Chiena (with only a walk, no buckets) will be held at midnight sharp on 2 and 16 August 2024: water is made to flow in the historic centre of the city, while, in the unusual nocturnal setting, spontaneous shows take place, musical, theatrical and dance.
