Udine: The city where you live best in Italy
Vita gazette – Quality of life, Udine in front of all the cities. According to the annual survey results by Il Sole 24 Ore, the city where people live best is Udine. Followed by Bologna and Trento. Milan is eighth, Rome 35th.
The 34th edition of the Sole 24 Ore survey on the most livable areas in Italy has been released. The province of Udine ranks first on the list that measures the well-being of the Italian population.
What made Udine leap onto the podium were, above all positive indicators such as the quality of life of women, the quality of life of children, and the large number of gyms, swimming pools and centres for physical well-being. It is also good in the “Justice and Security” category due to the low incidence of fires, computer crimes and car thefts. As well as for an economic indicator such as the “low incidence of families with ISEE under 7 thousand euros”.
Bologna and Trento were also on the podium, second and third, respectively. The new entries among the top ten Bergamo, this year’s capital of culture together with Brescia, rises to 5th place in the ranking of the most livable territories, where only in 1990 it had occupied eighth place and takes precedence in the thematic ranking of “Environment and services”. Modena, seventh, also returns to a top ten that it had only reached twice: in 1999 and 2022. The placement in the upper part of the ranking of the province of Aosta is more solid, in fourth place.
Milan is also confirmed in the top ten, stable compared to last year and still complete in the “Business and Work” category, and Florence, which, after occupying the podium in 2022, is sixth this year. Monza and Brianza are among the top ten, gaining 14 positions and taking the lead in the “Wealth and Consumption” category thanks to good results in average household spending on purchasing durable goods and real estate data. Verona is Closing the top ten, which dominated it in 2020 and 2021. However, the absences of Trieste and Bolzano stand out, falling to 12th and 13th position respectively.
Modena is in seventh place, returning to the top ten after reaching it only twice. While in sixth place in Florence after having occupied the podium in 2022. The territory of the Tuscan capital loses three positions, weighed down by data relating to reports of thefts and robberies in public streets, by rental fees (which erode to 84% of the declared average income) and by some new parameters, such as the consumption of anti-obesity drugs
Trento is third, Bologna second and, as mentioned, Udine first. The rise of the Friulian territory (+11 positions) among the 107 Italian Provinces examined with 90 statistical indicators is driven by some particular performances: first place in the synthetic index of the Quality of life of women and eighth in the Quality of life of children; it has the record of gyms, swimming pools and physical well-being centres; good (4th place) for “Justice and security.”
The absences of Trieste and Bolzano in the top 10 are particularly notable, falling to 12th and 13th, respectively. The performances of these two historic top seeds in the Sole 24 Ore survey were also influenced by placement in the second half of the “Environment and services” sector ranking, thanks to non-positive values in some indicators, including accessible schools and pharmacies for Bolzano, energy from renewable sources and Pnrr investments for Trieste.
Rome is 35th (-4 steps), preceded by Venice (-12) and followed by Turin (36th) and Genoa (47th, down 20 positions)
Also among the last classified are Syracuse (104th, -14 positions), Naples (105th, -7 positions, in the photo) and Caltanissetta (106th). Syracuse is penalised, among other things, by low life expectancy, failing businesses, the gender pay gap and the negligible number of regular domestic workers. Naples suffers from population density, resurgent predatory crime, poor employment data, and an unfavourable migratory balance.
This year, the cities where the quality of life is worse are concentrated mainly in the South, with the only exception of Cagliari, which comes in 23rd place. First, Foggia, 107th, returned to wear the black jersey after twelve years (she had been last in 2011 and 2002). But nine provinces from the Center or North have slipped into the previous 40 positions, three more than last year: in addition to Latina (87th), Frosinone (80th), Imperia (81st), Alessandria (70th) and Rovigo (68th), there they are Grosseto (74th), Viterbo (75th), Rieti (73rd) and Massa Carrara (72nd).
Agrigento, Southern Sardinia, Palermo, Brindisi, and Trapani lose ground; Vibo Valentia, Enna, Catanzaro, Salerno, Potenza and Isernia conquer several steps. Syracuse (104th, loses 14 positions) and Naples (105th, loses seven positions) also arrive in the last five.
However, the other large metropolitan areas remain essentially unchanged if Bologna, Milan and Florence are excluded: Rome is 35th (-4 steps), preceded by Venice (-12) and followed by Turin (36th) and Genoa (47th, decreasing of 20 positions).
