The Rome Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation file after a complaint presented by the Avs deputy, Angelo Bonelli, by the secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein and Nicola Fratoianni, secretary of Sinistra Italia, about the project on the Strait of Messina Bridge.

“The project documents have not been made public”

(SdM SpA) decided not to make public documents that are fundamental to the scope of the project and the procedures. For parliamentarians, the refusal of SdM SpA, which with the Decree is established as an in-house company, to deliver documents expressly provided by the Decree prevents them from exercising a right and action of control and verification.

History of the bridge

The government had accepted the decree for the rapid start of the “Bridge over the Strait of Messina” construction process, which will connect the Italian peninsula and Sicily. With its 3.2 kilometres in length, the Bridge over the Strait of Messina, which once completed will take the title of “longest suspension bridge in the world”, should be the economic, social and cultural engine of continental Italy, of the island of Sicily and Calabria.

A government move was made for the Strait of Messina Bridge, first brought onto the agenda in Italy in the early 1950s. Although it had been planned many times, its construction could not be most often initiated due to financial difficulties.

The Messina Strait Bridge, Italy’s 70-year dream, was shelved indefinitely in 2011 by the technocratic government led by Mario Monti, citing the financial and economic crisis.

In the written note from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, it was informed that the Strait of Messina Company, responsible for the bridge’s construction, proposes to be reactivated by providing it with a more modern structure within the scope of the decree approved by the Council of Ministers. The press release specifies that the bridge’s construction will be based on the final project of 2011, and the project in question will be updated in line with the new technical, safety and environmental standards of the time.
