Tram accident in Milan, two dead

In Milan, on Friday, a derailed tram ran over a pedestrian and came to a stop only after crashing into a building. Two people lost their lives in the accident, one of them a tram passenger, and 38 people were injured.

On Friday, February 27, in Milan, footage from the onboard cameras of tram number 9— which derailed and caused the deaths of two people and the injury of forty-eight others—was examined. Two of the injured are being treated in intensive care. These images, together with those recorded along Viale Vittorio Veneto, will be analysed by investigators to verify the driver’s account. Questioned immediately after the accident, the driver stated that he had not felt well and had been unable to carry out any maneuver, a circumstance that allegedly caused the sudden derailment of the vehicle.

The two victims are 59-year-old shop owner Ferdinando Favia from Vigevano and 56-year-old Senegalese national Abdou Karim Toure. Both were reportedly thrown out of the tram at the moment of the derailment. The 61-year-old tram driver was also initially taken to the hospital for precautionary observation.

Investigators examined footage from the cameras installed on tram line 9, which derailed on the afternoon of Friday, February 27, between Piazza Repubblica and Porta Venezia in Milan. In addition to the vehicle’s recordings, footage from surveillance cameras in the area along Viale Vittorio Veneto, where the accident occurred, was also obtained. The videos will be analysed to verify the driver’s statement. Immediately after the incident, the driver reportedly said he felt unwell and was unable to perform any manoeuvres. The tram then deviated from its planned route, turning sharply left at high speed and crashing into a building at the corner with Via Lazzaretto. The public prosecutor in charge of the case is awaiting documentation, including the driver’s testimony; his position is currently under review by the Prosecutor’s Office. Among the first measures planned are the autopsy of the two victims, who were thrown from the vehicle as a result of the impact, and a kinematic assessment.
